Emerging Design
The strategic masterplan for the site sets out a clear and co-ordinated vision for the future of the site, with a long-term framework to deliver a coherent development. These emerging design proposals concentrate on delivery of Phase 1 of the strategic masterplan. The design proposals, inspired by the Garden City Principles, focus on the centre of this development, establishing key connections and routes through the site along with a range of retail, commercial and residential uses. These proposals seek to respond to the context of Letchworth Garden City, respecting the character of the area while bringing improved vitality and vibrancy to the heart of the town centre.
As with development of the masterplan a key element of this process is early engagement with stakeholders, technical specialists, and the local community. Their input helps shape the design proposals ensuring that they respond positively to local needs while meeting broader strategic objectives. As assessments progress, the design will continue to evolve, refined through ongoing technical work and consultation.
Landscaping Vision
Landscaping and green space are a key component of these emerging designs. Landscape proposals hold true to Ebenezer Howard’s original Garden City Vision whilst addressing 21st Century challenges of biodiversity loss and fluctuating climate. The proposals will invite the pleasantries of the countryside into the heart of Letchworth Town Centre to the benefit of both people and nature and foster a ‘joyous union of Town and Country.’
